Architectural Plans

The first year was spent making a complete set of plans for the dollhouse. This meant not only measuring all the rooms, dormers, windows and doors, but also measuring all the interior cabinets, door frames, moldings and location of all the light fixtures. Over fifty drawings were made of all the details of the construction of the house. Only some are shown on this web page.

Some of the drawings were made for the marine carpenters who were going to construct the shell of the house. The remainder of the drawings were made for my benefit to allow me to construct the interior details,  such as cabinets and fireplaces, and the exterior details, such as the window casements, eaves and front porch. All the dimensions were reduced to 1/12 th scale and adjusted to the nearest convenient dimension. Since the house was built in 1838, the windows and doors were made in place and were not factory produced. This meant that they were not all of a standard size. For my convenience in mass producing doors and windows, they were all reduced to a standard size.

In addition it should be noted that all the dimensions were used only as a starting guide in the construction of the dollhouse. In practice all parts had to be carefully cut and fitted individually since one can not cut wood to exact dimensions.
